CS Northridge vs. CS Hayward

At Cal State Hayward 1 p.m.

Hayward Coach Tim Tierney is a defensive specialist and has built a solid unit this season, keyed by a rushing defense that allowed Cal Lutheran only nine yards on the ground in a 35-17 win last week. Unfortunately for Hayward, CSUN, despite standout running back Mike Kane, has gone heavily to a passing offense that has piled up 900 yards in three games this season. “We know Hayward is great against the run, but we don’t think they’ve faced a passing team as good as ours this season,” said CSUN Coach Tom Keele. The offense is led by quarterback Chris Parker, who ranks second in the Western Football Conference with 855 passing yards this season, and receivers Kenny Garrett and Richard Brown. Kane, the Matadors’ junior running back, needs only 20 yards to become the school’s all-time leading rusher. CSUN is 2-1 following last week’s 41-17 rout of San Francisco State. Hayward is 3-0 and ranked No. 9 in the nation in Division II.

Western New Mexico vs. Cal Lutheran

At Cal Lutheran College1:30 p.m.

When Cal Lutheran Coach Bob Shoup scheduled Western New Mexico (2-2), he figured the tiny NAIA school would give the Kingsmen a breather from the tough NCAA, Division II opponents that make up most of CLC’s schedule. “I was wrong,” said Shoup this week. “We don’t have a weak team on our schedule.” Western New Mexico, which was 7-2-1 last season, is riding a two-game winning streak. The Mustangs rely on brute force, according to Shoup, and attempted only one pass last week in a 30-7 win over the Colorado School of Mines. To combat the Mustang’s muscle, Mike Miller (6-4, 245) and Ivey Daughtery (6-5, 260) have been inserted in the CLC defensive line along with Lorenzo Martinez (6-1, 245), who is returning from a knee injury.

Moorpark vs. Allan Hancock

At Santa Maria High7:30 p.m.

After opening its season with two convincing victories, Moorpark dropped a 31-28 decision to Pierce last week. The Raiders open Western State Conference play against Allan Hancock, which is also coming off a tough loss (27-18 to West Los Angeles) after opening with two wins. Moorpark defeated West L.A., 33-10, two weeks ago. The Raider offense, which operates without a huddle, is averaging 364.7 yards per game. Moorpark, however, has allowed 296.3 yards per game, more than any WSC team. Hancock is led by quarterback Wes Warrecker, who has completed 56 of 97 passes for 699 yards. Raider fullback Jim Bittner has gained 195 yards on 44 carries for a 4.4 average and halfback Eddie Palmer has 173 yards on 25 attempts for a 6.9 average.
