Share

The 13th game of the world chess championship match between champion Anatoly Karpov and challenger Gary Kasparov was drawn Tuesday in Moscow. The score remains tied at two wins apiece, plus nine draws, giving each player a total of 6 1/2 points.

Game 14 will be played on Thursday.

Once again, the players opened with the Nimzo-Indian Defense. Playing black, Karpov varied from his choice of 4 . . . 0-0 in Game 11 and reverted to his 4 . . . c5, as in the first game of the match. This signaled that he had rehabilitated the line of play which brought him his first defeat, and, indeed, he soon demonstrated equality. Kasparov sacrificed a pawn on move 10, but gained no advantage when he recovered it at move 15.

Six wins are needed for victory. If neither player achieves six wins, then the leader in points after 24 games wins the match.
