Former Moorpark College kicker Darren Libonati found he wasn’t happy at Tulane shortly after transfering there.

Tulane’s loss became a gain for Nevada Las Vegas.

Libonati, an All-Southern Section performer at Thousand Oaks High, transfered to UNLV and is redshirting this season.

When Joey DiGiovanna, the Rebels’ current kicker, graduates in the spring, Libonati could find himself holding down the top spot.

“He was hitting 55-yarders in practice and he has impressed us already,” UNLV coach Harvey Hyde said of Libonati. “He definitely will be given an opportunity to become our kicker next season.”

That’s the encouragement Libonati wanted to hear, and he welcomes the challenge.

“They have great special teams here,” Libonati said. “This is the opportunity I’m looking for. I just ran into a change of philosophy at Tulane.”

John Price has been named men’s volleyball coach at Cal State Northridge, replacing Walt Ker, who stepped down to devote more time to the women’s program.

Price, an assistant to Ker last season, had coached girls volleyball at Thousand Oaks High for four years, leading his teams to two league championships and into the Southern Section quarterfinals in 1983.

Terry Craven, baseball coach at Cal State Northridge, has been appointed to the orientation committee of the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

He is one of six coaches on the panel, and will represent Division II baseball coaches at the organization’s annual national convention. The 1986 convention is in January in New Orleans.

Mitchell Fair, 33, has been named baseball coach at Crespi High, replacing Dave Ward.

The only blemish on Cal State Northridge’s 1985 record, a 4-0 preseason loss to the Nevada Las Vegas, may be keeping the Matadors from advancing in the NCAA Division II soccer poll.

In the Intercollegiate Soccer Assn. of America poll released Monday, Central Connecticut (6-0-1) is rated first, followed by Seattle-Pacific (10-1), Gannon, Penn., (11-0) and New York Tech (9-0-1). CSUN (9-1) is fifth.

The Matadors won their first two California Collegiate Athletic Assn. games after compiling a 7-1 preseason record. Nevada Las Vegas in ranked fifth in NCAA Division I.

Lee Davis of Thousand Oaks finished third with a 36-hole total of 148 at the Southern California Golf Assn. Mid-Amateur tournament Tuesday at the Bakersfield Country Club.
