PCAA Roundup : Sweeney Leads Fresno State

Quarterback Kevin Sweeney passed for 288 yards and two touchdowns to lead Fresno State to a 37-17 victory over San Jose State in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. Saturday night at Fresno.

Sweeney threw touchdown passes of 25 yards to Gene Taylor and five yards to Anthony Mosley, both in the third quarter.

Fresno State is 4-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the PCAA. San Jose is to 1-5 and 1-3.

Fresno State running back Kelly Skipper scored touchdowns on runs of five and two yards. Barry Belli kicked field goals of 35, 27 and 44 yards to give Fresno State a 9-3 halftime lead.

K.C. Clark accounted for both San Jose State touchdowns on runs of two and five yards. Quarterback Doug Allen rushed for 116 yards in 8 carries, including a fourth-quarter, 52-yard run that set up a score, and passed for 145 yards to lead the San Jose offense.

Nevada Las Vegas 24, Pacific 14--Junior quarterback Steve Stallworth threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Rebels over the Tigers at Las Vegas.

Stallworth, who completed 18 of 25 passes, threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Chris Bridges and a 19-yarder to Tony Lewis as the Rebels built a 24-0 lead with 10:36 left in the third quarter.

Pacific rallied to score twice in less than a minute but could draw no closer.

Tiger quarterback Hue Jackson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Gene Thomas with 3:17 remaining in the third period, and linebacker Andre Stockton intercepted a Stallworth pass and ran 16 yards for a touchdown with 2:24 remaining.

The Rebels’ Kirk Jones led all rushers with 120 yards in 21 carries.

Las Vegas improved to 2-2 in conference, 3-3 overall. The Tigers are 2-1 in conference, 3-3 overall.
