Golf Roundup : Wadkins Wins by One Stroke

Lanny Wadkins equaled the course record of nine-under-par 63 Sunday to overcome a five-stroke deficit and win the $400,000 Walt Disney World tournament by one shot at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Wadkins hit his second shot a foot from the cup on the par-5 fourth hole to set up an eagle 3. He added seven birdies to match the course record set by Hubert Green in 1973.

Wadkins finished the 72-hole event at 21-under-par 267 to earn the $72,000 first prize. Third-round leader Scott Hoch, who started the day five strokes up on Wadkins, saw his lead melt despite shooting a three-under 69.

Hoch, who led through the second and third rounds, and Mike Donald tied for second at 268. Donald shot a final-round 67.

The win was the 15th on the PGA Tour for Wadkins, whose career began in 1971, and his third this year. Earlier, he won the Bob Hope Classic and the L.A. Open.

Wadkins, one of 10 golfers who has earned more than $2 million in his career, has earned $443,313 this year and leads in the Player-of-the-Year competition.

Tying for fourth at 269 were Gary Koch and Payne Stewart. Koch also tied the course record of 63, while Stewart fired a 66.

Mike Fetchick celebrated his 63rd birthday by shooting an even-par 72 for a six-under-par total of 210 to win in the $200,000 Hilton Head Seniors International at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

It was the first Seniors tour win for Fetchick, who clinched the victory with a 15-foot birdie putt at the par-five 18th hole.

Finishing two shots back at 212 were Al Chandler, Orville Moody and Gene Littler.
