The federal government will spend $16.2 million over the next year to clear San Diego’s Tierrasanta neighborhood of military ordnance, Rep. Bill Lowery (R-San Diego) said. The ordnance is left over from World War II, when the area was used for military training and target practice. The danger of unexploded shells was brought to light in December, 1983, when a shell detonated, killing two boys and maiming a third. Lowery said the government has set aside money from the Defense Department’s Environmental Restoration Fund.
