Soccer Roundup : Topia’s Goal Gives Chapman 1-0 Win

Miguel Topia scored midway through the second half Wednesday to give Chapman College a 1-0 upset win over Cal State Northridge in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s soccer match at Chapman.
The victory leaves the teams tied for first place in the CCAA with 4-1 records. Northridge (11-2 overall) came into the match ranked fourth in the nation among NCAA Division 2 teams.
Topia scored from close range on an assist from Rick Snyder and Greg O’Bryan. Chapman goalie Craig Elliott made 12 saves in helping the Panthers (6-5 overall) to their fourth straight win.
In other college action:
Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Santa Barbara 3--Lewis Garcia scored for Fullerton with about six minutes to play to salvage a tie in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. match at Fullerton. Rich Davies scored twice in the first half for Fullerton (2-1-1, 7-4). Santa Barbara got two goals from Michael Zawinski and one from Michael Sanchez.
University of San Diego 3, UC Irvine 2--Jeff Silver’s goal with three minutes to play--his second of the match--gave San Diego the nonconference win on the Torreros’ home field. Silver took a pass from Bo Kaemmerle and beat Irvine goalie Victor Flores with a long shot from the left side for the game-winner.
Mark Stier and John Gran both scored first-half goals for Irvine (3-8-2). Kaemmerle scored with 30 seconds left in the first half to tie the score at 2-2.
