Weaver Will Make Boxing Debut at Marriott

Lloyd Weaver, one of the fighting Weaver triplets, will make his professional boxing debut against Tony Paisano of Pasadena in a middleweight bout on next Thursday’s card at the Irvine Marriott Hotel.

Weaver, the brother of former heavyweight champion Mike Weaver was originally scheduled to appear on a July program at the Marriott, but he pulled out at the weigh-in.

Featured in the main event on Thursday will be a 12-round bantamweight fight between George Garcia of Santa Ana and Luis Hernandez of Redlands for the vacant state title.

In the middleweight matchup, New Zealand champion Steve Renwick will meet former kick boxing champion Danny Lopez of Orange. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster locations.

Chapman College’s Terry Davis and Troy Turnbull have been named to the 1985 Men’s Division 2 All-Star Team, selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.

Davis finished third and Turnbull finished sixth in the final ITCA rankings. Davis advanced to the national semifinals in singles and was named an All-American, while Turnbull won his three singles matches in the team competition, including a straight-set victory against top-seeded YaYa Doumbia of Hampton (Va.) Institute.

Karli Grant of the Irvine School of Gymnastics’ novice optional team won the children’s division vault at the preliminary qualifying meet at the Monarchs National Gymnastic Training Center on Sunday.

In the senior division, Irvine team member Amy Whitehead took fourth all-around, followingthird-place finishes in the uneven parallel bars and the floor exercise and a fifth in the vault. Suzanne Agcaoili placed third in the vault.

In the junior division, Michelle Thomas was sixth all-around, and fifth in the balance beam and the uneven parallel bars. Janelle Fleischer was fourth in the bars.

Ruth and Tom Wysocki of El Toro will defend their 1984 title in the Foot Locker Partners National Championship 8-kilometer race at Griffith Park in Los Angeles on Nov. 2.

Ruth Wysocki was a competitor in the 1,500 and 800-meter finals of the 1984 Olympics, while Tom Wysocki is a top 10,000-meter runner.

The race allows any two runners to enter as partners. Awards are given in five age groups as well as for husband-wife, mother-daughter, father-son, and sibling partners. Entry blanks are available at Foot Locker stores, or by calling (213) 396-7727.
