Friday’s Highlights : Hawthorne Turns Back Beverly Hills

Alonzo Young threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Treamelle Taylor with 54 seconds remaining Friday to give Hawthorne High School a 13-10 win over Beverly Hills in an Ocean League opener for both teams.

Hawthorne (5-0-1) got the ball on the Beverly Hills 48 with 1:42 remaining in the game. Young then completed two passes to Taylor and ran for 11 yards to set up the winning touchdown.

Beverly Hills (3-1) had taken the lead, 10-6, with less than two minutes left when Eric Mueller connected with Chris Hardy on a 12-yard touchdown pass. Mueller finished with 17 completions in 21 attempts for 210 yards.

City

Locke 60, Narbonne 6--Sophomore quarterback Darren Hagen threw for 140 yards and five touchdowns in the Freeway League opener for both teams at Locke. Hagen took over for two-year starting quarterback Leon Otis, who was moved to wide receiver. Otis had two receptions for 54 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 45 yards and one touchdown in two carries. Locke is 2-3 overall. Narbonne is 1-4.

Washington 26, Jordan 16--Washington quarterback Marc White completed 13 of 21 passes for 228 yards, including scoring throws to Robert McCullor and Horace Butler in the Crosstown League game at Jordan. Jordan’s Shelton Trosclair gained 106 yards in 11 carries and scored on runs of 23 and 21 yards in the league opener for both teams. Washington is 3-2 overall and Jordan 0-5.

Southern Section

Fontana 35, Rubidoux 3--John Kidd gained 112 yards in 13 carries, including a 58-yard touchdown run, and Barry Titus completed 6 of 9 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown for The Times’ No. 2-ranked team in the Citrus Belt League game at Fontana. Titus also rushed for two touchdowns. Fontana is 3-0 in the league and 5-1 overall. Rubidoux is 1-2 and 3-3.

Alemany 10, Crespi 7--Alemany got all its points in the second quarter on a 21-yard field goal by Jim Kang and a 48-yard pass play from Sean Casey to Scoop Augustus in the Del Rey League game. Crespi scored with 8:37 remaining on a two-yard run by Jeff Kellogg. Crespi had a chance to tie the game twice in the final five minutes, but Peter Zenobi missed field goals of 52 and 42 yards. Dennis Mason of Alemany had 96 yards in 19 carries to top both teams. Alemany is 1-0 in the league and 6-0 overall. Crespi is 0-1 and 4-2.

Whittier 35, Santa Fe 14--Whittier fullback Rene Barton did enough work for both teams as he rushed for 317 yards in 49 carries and scored on runs of two, two and five yards in the Whitmont League game at Whittier. Whittier is 2-1 and 3-3, Santa Fe 0-3 and 0-6.

Norco 35, Arlington 21--Junior Chris Kruswicki completed 24 of 33 passes for 393 yards and a touchdown for Norco in the Ivy League game at Ramona High. Kruswicki’s primary receiver was Dave Kelly, who had 13 receptions for 181 yards. In six games, Kruswicki has completed 80 of 126 for 1,305 yards and 6 touchdowns. Kelly has 56 catches for 777 yards and 6 touchdowns. Also teaming with Kruswicki was Todd Noesser, who had 5 receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown. Thor Muntz of Arlington had 146 yards in 17 carries to improve his six-game totals to 1,047 yards in 107 carries. Norco opened a 21-7 lead, and Arlington was never able to get closer than one touchdown. Norco is now 3-0 in the league and 5-1 overall. Arlington is 2-1 and 4-2.

La Serna 28, Bell Gardens 25--Larry Hart’s interception of Bell Gardens quarterback Javier Fimbres at the La Serna 17 late in the game enabled the Lancers to hand Bell Gardens its first Whitmont League loss in four years. La Serna, ralling from a 25-14 deficit with five minutes left in the game, scored the winning touchdown on a 49-yard run by quarterback Mike Westmoreland. Bell Gardens is 2-1 in the league and 4-2 overall. La Serna is 2-1 and 3-3.

Canyon Country Canyon 14, Palmdale 0--Canyon’s Dio Shipp recovered Tony Edwards’ fumble on Palmdale’s 24-yard line to set up fullback Paul Chadwell’s 11-yard touchdown run with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter of the Golden League game at Palmdale. The Cowboys’ other score came on a 20-yard pass play from John Watkins to Chad Ziegler. Palmdale’s Tony Edwards, one of the leading running backs the Southern Section, gained 141 yards in 29 carries to boost his season total to 1,101 yards in six games. Canyon junior running back Lance Cross had 136 yards in 20 carries. Canyon, The Times’ No. 5-ranked team, is 1-0 in the league and 6-0 overall. Palmdale is 0-1 and 4-2.

Magnolia 14, Western 10--Wide receiver Bryan Rosa caught a 10-yard scoring pass in the first quarter, then completed a 38-yard pass play to Chris Korpela in the second quarter to account for both Sentinel touchdowns in the Orange League game at Western. The Pioneers tied the game, 7-7, with 1:15 remaining in the first quarter on a one-yard run by quarterback Rich Lodding. Magnolia went ahead in the third quarter on Mike Tietge’s 10-yard pass to Rosa. Western’s David Brown kicked a 35-yard field goal to make the score 14-10 at halftime. In the second half, Western wasn’t able to get closer than the Magnolia 33. Magnolia is 1-0 in the league and 5-1 overall. Western is 0-1 and 3-2-1.
