Southwest Roundup : 14th-Ranked Baylor Beats Texas A&M;, 20-15

The fact they had gambled and lost in the third period didn’t effect Baylor Coach Grant Teaff and fullback Ralph Stockemer when the chips were down late in their Southwest Conference game with Texas A&M; Saturday night.

Stockemer’s fourth-down, one-yard scoring plunge with 5:38 left at Waco, Tex., carried the SWC-leading Bears to a 20-15 victory over the Aggies.

Earlier, Teaff and Stockemer disdained the field goal and rolled snake-eyes on a fourth-and-one at the Aggie 10 when Stockemer was stopped.

“We decided to try it one more time,” Teaff said. “Actually, it was only a matter of inches. Ralph dove right in there and made it with plenty to spare.

“I never thought about going for a field goal because I was afraid a field goal (17-15 lead) would not hold up. It was a big victory over a very talented team,” Teaff said. “It keeps us on top of the conference without a loss.”

The 14th-ranked Bears, who are now 4-0 in SWC play and 6-1 overall, traveled 75 yards in 16 plays for the game-winner. The Aggies dropped to 2-1 in the league race and 4-2 overall.

Southern Methodist 37, Houston 13--At Houston, SMU’s Mustangs found just the combination for breaking out of their two-game losing streak--100-yard performances from tailbacks Reggie Dupard and Jeff Atkins.

Dupard rushed 184 yards in 31 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. Atkins, Dupard’s backup, rushed for 112 yards in 25 carries.

Dupard and Atkins battered the Cougars into submission with a 20-0 halftime lead as the Mustangs ended improved their record to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in the SWC. Houston dropped to 1-5 and 0-3, and lost its homecoming for the fifth straight year.

Rice 29, Texas Tech 27--James Hamrick booted three field goals, including a 57-yard game-winning kick with 18 seconds left at Lubbock, Tex., as the Owls won their second Southwest Conference game after losing 26 conference games in a row.

Rice boosted its record to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, dropping Texas Tech to 3-4 and 0-4.

Hamrick set a school record with his final kick. His other field goals were from 22 and 27 yards.

The Raiders tried unsuccessfully to regain the lead when freshman quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver threw to Lemuel Stinson on the last play of the game, but the ball hit Stinson in the chest in the end zone but the ball bounced off.

Texas Christian 14, North Texas St. 10--Its football season mired in a slush-fund scandal, TCU used a 62-yard pass play to beat North Texas State in a nonconference game at Fort Worth, Tex.

“This win couldn’t have come at a better time,” said quarterback David Rascoe, who hit flanker Jerrod Delaney on the 62-yard play in the final quarter. “We really needed it.”

A tricky shovel pass from Sean Millsap to halfback Tony Jeffery on a two-point conversion gave the Horned Frogs an 11-10 lead with 7:41 remaining.

Ken Ozee’s 18-yard field goal with 1:47 left was the insurance TCU needed to end a three-game losing streak and even its record at 3-3.
