The Toronto Blue Jays today named third-base coach Jimy Williams manager to succeed Bobby Cox, who this year led the club to its first American League East championship before signing on as general manager of the Atlanta Braves.

Williams, 42, Toronto’s third-base coach since 1980, managed six years in the minors before joining the Toronto team. He had earlier been considered for the manager’s job in Oakland after the 1982 season and in Seattle after the 1983 season.
