Mt. SAC Invitational : San Diego High’s Davis, Vista Girls Win Events

San Diego High School’s Marc Davis won the individual boys’ sweepstakes race and Vista captured the girls’ team sweepstakes, as the two-day Mt. San Antonio Invitational, the largest prep cross-country meet in the nation, concluded at Walnut Saturday afternoon.

Davis finished with a time of 14:58, ahead of Valhalla’s Mark Doni, who came in at 15:00.3. Vista won the girls team sweepstakes by placing entrants fourth, sixth, eighth, 13th and 32nd. The fourth-place finisher was Kira Jorgensen, at 18:50, Julie Price’s 19:09 was good for sixth.

In the girls’ individual sweepstakes, Darcy Arreola of Grossmont was third at 18:19.

Jesuit High of Sacramento won the battle of the twins and the boys’ sweepstakes race, breaking the course record in the process.

Rebecca Chamberlain of San Jose Leigh, the State 3,200-meter champion in track, won the top girls’ individual race, covering the three-mile course in 17:45 to beat El Monte Mountain View sophomore Tracey Williams by 32 seconds.

Jesuit’s twins, Eric and Mark Mastalir, and their Saugus counterparts, Darin and Kirk Stonerock, were all among the leaders about six minutes into the boys’ team race, but Kirk Stonerock had dropped off the pace about 2 1/2 minutes later. And by the 13-minute mark, Eric Mastalir had taken control of the race with a 12-second lead over his brother and 17 in front of Darin Stonerock.

That’s the way it ended, the Mastalirs taking 1-2 and the Stonerocks 3-4. Eric Mastalir finished in 14:38, second only to Jeff Nelson’s 14:32.2 for Burbank in 1978 on the all-time Mt. SAC list for high school competition, as Jesuit had a combined time of 77:57 from its five runners to break the 8-year-old team mark by 10 seconds. In points, the Marauders squeaked by Saugus, 97-98.
