Portland Eases Past Warriors, 116-99

Kiki Vandeweghe scored 25 points and Clyde Drexler added 19 as the Portland Trail Blazers rolled to a 116-99 victory over Golden State Sunday in the only game scheduled in the National Basketball Assn.

The Blazers took the lead for good with four minutes left in the first half when Darnell Valentine stole the ball twice from Warrior guard Eric (Sleepy) Floyd and Drexler finished off the fast breaks with field goals.

The steals gave the Blazers a 48-44 lead and the Warriors never caught up.

Portland blew the game open in the third period with 11 points from Vandeweghe, stretching a 54-49 halftime lead to an 83-69 advantage.

Six players scored in double figures for the Blazers while Terry Teagle led the Warriors with 20. Floyd added 18 for Golden State (0-2).

The Blazers (2-0) got 10 points and eight assists from Valentine, who also had eight steals. Valentine has racked up 15 steals in Portland’s two games.

Portland held Golden State center Joe Barry Carroll to 11 points and 9 rebounds, seven of those points in the fourth quarter when the Blazer reserves routed the Warriors, 43-30.

Blazer rookie Terry Porter, a first-round draft choice from Wisconsin Stevens Point, had a 13 points, 10 of those in the last period.

Kenny Carr added 12 points and a 13 rebounds for Portland.

Portland center Sam Bowie, playing only a few minutes, fouled out in the fourth quarter with just six points.
