San Diego Volleyball : Morton Leads Aztecs Past No. 8 Hawaii

Middle-blockers Kris Morton and Renee Pankopf teamed up to lead San Diego State to a 3-0 Pacific Coast Athletic Association win over Hawaii Friday night in Peterson Gym.

The No. 17 Aztecs (21-12, 4-4) beat the No. 8 Rainbows (20-6, 5-3), 15-12, 17-15, 15-9. Morton had 18 kills and seven blocks, while Pankopf added 11 kills and 10 digs.

The two teams return to Peterson Gym for another match tonight at 7:30.

In other action involving local teams:

USD 3, Northern Arizona 2--The Toreros won for the first time, officially, this season, scoring a 7-15, 15-11, 10-15, 15-12, 15-13 decision in a non-conference match at Alcala Park. The Toreros (1-19) had three wins taken away earlier this season because they used an ineligible player. Gina Trapletti had 18 kills and 9 digs for USD, while Kris Mitchell added 14 kills to help the Toreros. Northern Arizona (8-12) was led by Peggy Poremba, a freshman from Chula Vista, who had 12 kills.

Azusa Pacific 3, UC San Diego 0--Injury riddled UCSD (24-14) suffered a 15-12, 15-6, 16-14 loss and lost another player to injury. In the first game, UCSD starter Marci Lischer fractured an ankle and figures to miss the remainder of the season. Nine UCSD players have suffered injuries this season. Jennifer Pettigrew led the Tritons with a .500 hitting performance (9-for-18, 0 errors).

U.S. International 3, Nevada-Reno 0--The Gulls (10-13, 3-4), led by middle-blocker Claudia Johnson, recorded a 15-13, 15-5, 15-8 decision in a West Coast Athletic Conference match at Grossmont College. Johnson had 14 kills for USIU. Nevada-Reno (6-17, 2-5) recorded a .011 hitting percentage.
