Hart Levels San Gabriel in the Second Half, 42-7

It was hardly the night of the Refrigerator. The Chicago Bears have William Perry and the San Gabriel Matadors have 5-10, 235-pound quarterback Matt Lujan, who doesn’t look a pound under 250.

No matter, it was not a stellar game for electrical appliances, and Hart disconnected the Matadors on Friday night, 42-7, in a Foothill League game at College of the Canyons.

The game dragged until the last minute of the first half. Up until that point, the San Gabriel offense attempted to keep the game close by keeping the ball away from the Hart offense.

“They kept the ball away from us early,” Hart Coach Rick Scott said at the half. “They knew we are a good offensive team. If their game plan continues to work, they might luck out and win this thing.”

The plan worked until the Indians finally scored with 55 seconds left in the half.

Quarterback Jim Bonds, who completed 17 of 27 passes for 281 yards, hit Mark Didion from nine yards. The drive started on the Hart 25. The Indians chipped away until Bonds completed a 32-yard pass to Cedric Ingram, who advanced to the 11 and set up Bonds’ first touchdown pass.

After that play, the action perked up. On the kickoff, the Indians recovered a San Gabriel fumble at the Matador 46.

Five plays later, Bonds fired a 35-yard touchdown pass with three seconds left in the half. Mitch Spake added the extra point to make the score 14-0.

While Hart linemen were slapping high fives on the sideline, San Gabriel’s Paul Gutierrez caught a line-drive kick, ran into a pack of Indian players, bounced free and ran in for a 55-yard touchdown.

Lujan kicked the extra point, making the score 14-7 at halftime.

Bonds broke the game open in the third quarter when he threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hite.

Bonds later added a touchdown pass of 11 yards.

The win improved Hart’s record to 5-3-1 overall, 4-0 in league. San Gabriel fell to 4-5, 2-2.
