Agreement has been reached for a fight between Michael Spinks, the International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, and Gerry Cooney in March, the Associated Press said.
A contract is expected to be finalized upon the return of promoter Butch Lewis from Europe next week.
IBF President Robert Lee has said Spinks will be stripped of his crown if he fights an unranked opponent. Cooney is not ranked.
