PREP FOOTBALL : Friday’s Playoff Highlights : Carson Rolls, 35-6; Banning Is a 14-0 Winner

Quarterback Kevin Tate and wide receiver Tyrone Smith hooked up for touchdown passes of 20 and 36 yards, and the Carson High defense set school records for most sacks in a game (11) and in a season (55) as the top-ranked Colts defeated El Camino Real, 35-6, in the first round of the City 4-A playoffs Friday night.

The Times’ No. 2 team, Banning, beat Granada Hills Kennedy, 14-0, at Veterans Stadium, with Eric Sharp rushing for a two-yard touchdown in the first quarter and safety Marvin Pollard returning an interception 43 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Dorsey, which lost to Carson and Banning in the final three weeks of the regular season, rebounded to defeat injury-riddled Granada Hills, 34-14.

The Dons did most of their damage in the first half, jumping out to a 27-0 lead while holding Granada to one first down and 28 yards. Tailback Tommy Jackson finished with 153 yards and 3 touchdowns in 19 carries. Four Granada starters, including All-City wide receiver Greg Fowble, were injured in last week’s loss to San Fernando and didn’t suit up against Dorsey.

In other City games:

3-A DIVISION--Hamilton, which ended the regular season with a 3-6 record, upset once-beaten San Pedro, 8-6. San Pedro had a chance to go ahead in the fourth quarter as J.R. Guin appeared headed for a touchdown after catching a pass from quarterback Randy Galosic. But Guin fumbled on the Hamilton eight-yard line.

2-A DIVISION--Lincoln had its most successful season in 20 years end in a 7-0 loss to Roosevelt as Danny Hernandez threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ramon Galindo in the third quarter. Lincoln drove to the Roosevelt seven in the first quarter, only to have a fake field-goal attempt stopped, and later missed two field goal tries.

In the first round of the Southern Section playoffs, Greg Colbrunncapped an 85-yard drive, aided by a pass-interference and a personal-foul penalty, with a four-yard run with 54 seconds left to play to give Fontana a 28-21 win over Loyola in a Big Five Conference game at Glendale High. Barry Titus threw three touchdown passes for Fontana.

La Puente Bishop Amat, The Times’ No. 1 team in the Southern Section, scored a 27-10 win over Lakewood as junior running back Eric Bieniemy rolled up 265 yards and 3 touchdowns in 38 carries.

In one of the biggest games of the week, Long Beach Poly defeated Santa Fe Springs St. Paul, 41-15.

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE--For the fourth time in five years, Lynwood went into the playoffs as the top-seeded team and lost in the first round. Santa Ana turned the trick this time with a 29-3 victory at Lynwood as halfback Robert Lee had 163 yards and two touchdowns.

COASTAL CONFERENCE--Top-seeded Pasadena Muir, playing without star running back Ricky Ervins, beat Burbank, 34-21.

NORTHWESTERN CONFERENCE--Third-seeded Hawthorne, with 30- and 61-yard touchdown pass plays from Alonzo Young to Treamelle Taylor, scored a 27-0 win over Righetti.

EASTERN CONFERENCE--Quarterback Dan McGwire passed for 329 yards and five touchdowns--three to his favorite target, Travis Watkins--as top-seeded Claremont beat City of Industry Workman, 59-12. In another game, Derrick Hawkins kicked a 28-yard field goal with 1:02 left to give Riverside Arlington a 17-14 win over San Marino. San Marino scored their points in the second quarter on Jim Wagner’s 26-yard run and a 90-yard kickoff return by John Bishop. Second-seeded Pico Rivera El Rancho got two three-yard touchdown runs by Adrian Ortega in the fourth quarter to beat La Canada, 24-14.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE--The two top teams won easily. Covina Charter Oak beat Cajon, 37-8, with Jeff Obert getting 144 yards and 2 touchdowns in 22 carries and catching a 64-yard scoring pass from John Stuycula. The Chargers had 446 yards in total offense. Second-seeded Diamond Bar, which won its last two games going into the playoffs by a combined 84-0, got 245 yards and 4 touchdowns from Kraig Washington and another shutout from the defense to defeat Indio, 45-0. Elsewhere, Eddie Browning completed 21 of 31 passes for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Riverside La Sierra over defending champion Baldwin Park, 31-14. Scott Enyart caught nine passes for 187 yards and two of the touchdowns.

DESERT-MOUNTAIN CONFERENCE--Tailback Chris Linane carried 25 times for 138 yards, which raised his season total to 1,322, and scored the winning touchdown as Santa Ynez beat Santa Paula, 21-20.

INLAND CONFERENCE--Second-seeded Lancaster Paraclete defeated Covina Western Christian, 22-0.
