A Cheer for the California Bowl

Share

Congratulations to Tia Gindick for the Oct. 6 article turning the spotlight on California’s second fastest-growing city, Fresno (“Fresno Receives High Marks From Natives Despite Survey Scores”). It was tasteful and well done. We in Fresno are well aware of the area’s positive attributes, but we are quite willing to share that knowledge with readers of the Los Angeles Times.

One addition to the article would have made it complete from my perspective. Each of us has his own corner, and mine is the California Bowl. The Fresno article would have been complete had it included the Bowl in its list of Fresno attractions.

Each December the California Bowl matches the champion of the Mid-American Conference vs. the winner of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. It is the first of the annual NCAA sanctioned bowls, the series culminating with the Rose Bowl. Only two bowls are newer than the one in Fresno. Dec. 14 is the date set for California Bowl V.

The game is played in Fresno State University’s 30,000-seat Bulldog Stadium. The first four games have been exciting affairs. We are well on the way to another sellout crowd for this year’s game, having sold about 16,000 seats.

The California Bowl is devoted to a most worthy charity, Valley Children’s Hospital. It is the only institution of its kind in the San Joaquin Valley, an area as large as the state of Ohio. The Bowl expects to contribute more than $30,000 to the hospital in 1985.
