Phillips Quits as Saints’ Coach

NEW ORLEANS —
Bum Phillips abruptly resigned as head coach of the New Orleans Saints today, forgoing the final $1.3 million of his contract. “My job here was to provide a winning season, and I didn’t do that,” Phillips said. The Saints are 4-8 this year. Wade Phillips, son of the head coach and defensive coordinator, was named interim head coach. Team President Eddie Jones also resigned.
