College Basketball Roundup : Bias Scores 33 but Miss Almost Costs Maryland

Len Bias scored a career-high 33 points but missed a shot in the final seconds that nearly cost 17th-ranked Maryland an 81-80 victory over George Mason on Tuesday night at Fairfax, Va.

Bias missed a corner jumper as the 45-second clock expired with 12 seconds left in the game, giving George Mason a chance to win the inaugural game at 10,000-seat Patriot Center.

Tracy Ballard pump-faked Bias into the air, but his 15-foot jumper hit the back rim and bounced out at time expired.

Freshman guard Earl Moore, one of three Patriots with 13 points, keyed the second-half comeback as George Mason cut a 13-point deficit down to one. Moore’s layup with 2:13 left pulled George Mason within 79-78.

But Bias, who hit seven straight free throws at one point, sank a short jumper to make it 81-78 and Rob Rose hit a short bank shot to get the Patriots close again.

Darrin Mosley had 19 points for the Patriots.

Wake Forest 68, N.C. Charlotte 67--Rod Watson hit two free throws with 24 seconds left and the Demon Deacons held off the 49ers at Charlotte, N.C.

Watson’s free throws made it 68-65, but Mike Milling responded with a tip-in for the 49ers to make it 68-67 with three seconds left. Rodney Abrams stole Wake Forest’s inbounds pass, but after a timeout, Charlotte’s Jeff West was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

Tyrone Bogues led Wake Forest (2-0) with 14 points. Milling had 16 for the 49ers.

Lamar 78, Villanova 59--Anthony Todd scored 20 points and the Cardinals knocked off the defending national champion Wildcats at Beaumont, Tex.

The Cardinals broke a 29-29 tie with 11 straight points to pull ahead for good.

Harold Pressley scored 15 points for the Wildcats.

Alabama Birmingham 92, Missouri Baptist 54--Jerome Mincy, Tracy Foster and Eddie Collins each scored 12 points to lead the 20th-ranked Blazers past the Spartans at Birmingham, Ala.

Anthony Moore scored 24 points for Missouri Baptist.

Northwestern 77, Cal State LA 63--Center Shon Morris scored 23 points and freshman guard Jeff Grose added 16 as the Wildcats turned back the Golden Eagles at Evanston, Ill.

Sam Veal had 20 points and Tony Brown added 15 for CSLA.

Illinois 95, Chicago Loyola 64--Scott Meents scored six of his 12 points in the first four minutes as the seventh-ranked Illini opened with an easy victory over the Ramblers.

Ken Norman added 16 points for Illinois, while Andre Moore had 17 for Loyola.

Ohio State 83, Brooklyn College 57--Dennis Hopson scored 18 points and Brad Sellers added 14 as the Buckeyes shook off the Kingsmen at Columbus, Ohio.

Freshman Andre Blackett had 24 points for Brooklyn.

North Carolina 110, Iona 67--Steve Hale scored 15 points and Kenny Smith, Brad Daugherty and Warren Martin each added 14 as the top-ranked Tar Heels buried the Gaels for their second straight victory.

Bob Coleman had 20 points for Iona.

Duke 84, William & Mary 61--Johnny Dawkins scored 28 points and Mark Alarie added 17 as the sixth-ranked Blue Devils overpowered the Indians at Williamsburg, Va.

The Blue Devils (4-0) raced to a 46-30 halftime lead behind 76.9% shooting from the field. Dawkins made 14 of 18 shots in the game.

Syracuse 96, Cornell 62--Wendell Alexis and Dwayne Washington each scored 16 points as the fourth-ranked Orangemen routed the Big Red at Syracuse.

Rafael Addison scored 13 points, and Rony Seikaly added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Syracuse.

Connecticut 80, Yale 76--Earl Kelley scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and 10 in the final 10 minutes Tuesday night as the Huskies held off the Elis at Storrs, Conn.

But Kelley made two foul shots with 28 seconds remaining and scored seconds later on a fast break layup to secure the victory.

Auburn 61, Birmingham Southern 51--Chuck Person scored 24 points, 14 in the second half, as the 19th-ranked Tigers built a 21-point lead and coasted to a victory at Auburn, Ala.

Kelvin Elston scored 16 points for Southern.

Mississippi 80, Christian Bros. 67--Eric Smith poured in 32 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead the Rebels rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to beat the Buccaneers at Oxford, Miss.

Tim Stock scored 18 points for Christian Brothers.

Stanford 87, George Washington 72--Freshman forward Todd Lichti came off the bench to score 15 points as the Cardinal beat the Colonials at Stanford. John Paye, Stanford quarterback and point guard, had five points in the final three minutes.

Texas San Antonio 60, UC Riverside 58--Bernard Brown hit a layup with in the final minutes to lift the Roadrunners to a victory over the Highlanders at San Antonio, Tex.

Robert Jimerson had 18 points for Riverside.

Kentucky 89, Chaminade 57--Kenny Walker and Ed Davendar scored 20 points each as then 10th-ranked Wildcats Kentucky routed the Silverswords at Honolulu.

Michigan State 89, Maine 58--Scott Skiles scored 29 points and Darryl Johnson added 21 as the Spartans rolled over the Black Bears at East Lansing, Mich., to pace Michigan State to an 89-58 victory over Maine.
