Three College Football Coaching Spots Filled

Three college football coaching vacancies were filled Monday. David McWilliams, a long-time assistant at the University of Texas, was named to head Texas Tech’s program, the University of Idaho’s Dennis Erickson was named head coach at the University of Wyoming, and Kansas State picked Stan Parrish, former coach at Marshall.

The University of Tennessee, meanwhile, extended the contract of Johnny Majors, ending speculation that the former University of Pittsburgh coach might jump back to the Panthers to replace the recently fired Foge Fazio.

McWilliams, who in 16 years has turned Texas’ defense into one of the most respected in the nation, replaced popular Jerry Moore, who was fired after five years with the Red Raiders because he could not put the team among the elite of the Southwest Conference. The Red Raiders were 1-7 in the conference this season.

Erickson, replacing Al Kincaid at Wyoming, said he plans to bring a wide-open offense with him. He had a 32-15 record in his four years at Idaho, and strongly emphasizes a passing attack. His “Erickson Air Express” generated nearly 500 yards a game during each of the last three seasons.

Parrish described his philosophy as “pass, pass, pass, and then punt,” and said he does not expect a lengthy rebuilding process at Kansas State, which has had only four winning seasons in 51 years and finished 1-10 this season.
