College Basketball Roundup : ‘Pee Wee’ Leads Florida State Over N.C. State

Randy Allen scored 19 points, and Pee Wee Barber added 16 points, with 7 assists, to lead Florida State to a 76-67 victory over North Carolina State Wednesday night at Tallahassee, Fla.

Allen hit 7 of 11 shots in lifting Florida State to a 2-1 record. The victory came on the heels of a disappointing performance by Florida State, an 85-67 loss to Florida last week.

Chris Washburn had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack (3-2).

Florida State hit 55% of its shots in the first half to lead, 44-35, at halftime. The Wolfpack came no closer than 8 points int the second half.

Florida State had 12 steals to North Carolina State’s 6.

“Pee Wee on the fast break really opened the game for us,” Florida State Coach Joe Williams said. “I’m never surprised when you win. I think we can win every time we step on the floor.” Barber is 6-1.

Wolfpack Coach Jim Valvano wasn’t surprised by the loss.

“One of the things we didn’t get done tonight was taking a little bit better control of the basketball,” he said. “We got beat by a better basketball team. There’s no excuses.”

Utah 76, Santa Clara 71--Manuel Hendrix scored 25 points to pace the Utes at Salt Lake City.

Utah (4-2) led, 41-27, at halftime. Its biggest lead was 62-47 with 10:55 left.

Steve Kenilvort led the Broncos (2-4) with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists.

Baylor 84, Texas Lutheran 53--Darryl Middleton scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead the Bears (4-0) to victory at Waco, Tex. The lossing Bulldogs are 4-1.

Tulsa 76, Colorado 65--David Moss scored 28 points, and Tracy Moore added 27 at Tulsa. It was the first defeat for Colorado (4-1). Tulsa raised its record to 3-1.

Northern Arizona 66, Oregon 61--David Duane scored 16 points, and Andy Hurd added 14 to pace the Lumberjacks (3-1) to victory at Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Ducks trailed, 28-21, at halftime, then cut the lead to one, but Northern Airzona managed to hold off the charge.

Oregon (2-2) got 25 points from Anthony Taylor.

Duke 84, Vanderbilt 74--Although physically tired from playing four games in six days, Duke claimed 18 rebounds in the second half and used a pressing defense to create 18 Commodore turnovers during the game at Nashville, Tenn.

“Our whole team is tired, but in the second half our experience showed,” said Blue Devil senior Mark Alarie, who scored 16 points.

Senior guard Johnny Dawkins topped the Duke scorers with 21 points as the Blue Devils, members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, raised their record to 7-0.

The Commodores are 2-1.

DePaul 93, St. Francis, N.Y. 48--Dallas Comegys scored 18 points for the Blue Demons at Rosemont, Ill.

DePaul (2-0) took a 22-7 lead with 9:30 left in the first half and breezed from there. The Terriers are 2-1.

Minnesota 83, Detroit 71--Marc Wilson scored 20 points to pace the Gophers at Minneapolis.

The Gophers (6-1) led, 44-24, at halftime, shooting 60% from the field and outrebounding the Titans, 23-11.

John McIntyre led the Titans (2-3) with 20 points.

Kansas 101, Western Carolina 79--Danny Manning and Greg Dreiling each scored 21 points to fortify an early rally sparked by Calvin Thompson and carry the Jayhawks to victory at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas improved to 5-1; Western Carolina is 1-1.

Northwestern 82, Loyola of Chicago 76--Elliot Fullen and Shon Morris scored 21 points each to lead the Wildcats’ win at Evanston, Ill.

Andre Moore of Loyola led all scorers with 27 points, but the Ramblers dropped to 1-4, while Northwestern hiked its record to 3-1.

Georgia Tech 94, Tennessee Chattanooga 74--The Yellow Jackets, playing their third road game in five days, led by only 49-47 early in the second half at Chattanooga, but the Mocs missed three opportunities to tie before Georgia Tech pulled away.

Mark Price, a 6-footer from Enid, Okla., scored a game-high 25 points for Georgia Tech (3-1), while sophomore forward Duane Ferrell added 21. The losers dropped to 2-1.

Oral Roberts 89, San Diego State 77--Maurice Smith scored 24 points and pulled down 19 rebounds for the winners at Tulsa, Okla.

Oral Roberts’ record is 3-1, San Diego State’s 0-4.

Arizona 63, Denver 54--Junior Steve Kerr scored 22 points, including three jumpers to put the game out of reach in the second half, as the Wildcats (2-2) won at Tucson. The Pioneers are 2-4.
