A group of Carlsbad golfers, frustrated because they must drive 20 minutes or more to play on public courses in other communities, has persuaded the City Council to consider building a municipal golf course.

At the urging of the Carlsbad Golf Committee, which presented petitions signed by 275 residents supporting the idea, the council Tuesday night agreed to spend about $15,000 to study the feasibility of a course. Carlsbad has several private golf courses, but the closest regulation course open to the public is Oceanside’s municipal course, which is said to be overcrowded.

Members of the golf committee, who bill their proposal as an excellent way to increase tourism in Carlsbad, have identified two possible course sites already owned by the city--Lake Calavera in northeast Carlsbad and the 288-acre Macario Canyon Park area just south of Agua Hedionda Lagoon.

The study is expected to take 30 days.
