Driver Turns Self In After Freeway Death

An 18-year-old Sylmar man walked into the Van Nuys police station shortly before midnight Wednesday and admitted being the driver of a car that struck and killed a woman motorist on the San Diego Freeway Wednesday afternoon, Los Angeles police said.

The man, Scott D. Halsey, told police the brakes on his car failed, causing him to strike a car driven by Barbara Ann Leon, 19, also of Sylmar. Halsey fled on foot, leaving his car, police said. Leon was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Sgt. John O’Toole said Halsey told police he fled because he was frightened. He said police have not been able to establish whether Halsey’s car had mechanical trouble.

Halsey was jailed on suspicion of felony manslaughter, then released Thursday on $2,500 bail, O’Toole said.
