San Diego State Dial Tournament : Aztecs Win Their First Game, Meet New Orleans in Final

Freshman forward Jessica Haynes scored 25 points and junior guard Lisa Stevens added 20 to lead the San Diego State women’s basketball team to a 90-77 win over Jackson State in the first round of the Dial tournament Friday night at Peterson Gym.

It was the Aztecs’ first win in three tries. Jackson State, which was led by Rochelle Henderson’s 19 points, dropped to 0-2.

The Aztecs will play New Orleans (4-1) in tonight’s championship game at 8 p.m. New Orleans defeated San Jose State (0-4), 69-50, in Friday’s first game. San Jose State and Jackson State will meet in the consolation game tonight at 6.

The Aztecs, starting three freshmen, got off to a sluggish start against the Tigers and trailed 8-0 early in the contest.

SDSU did not get the lead until just five minutes remained in the first half when Haynes scored on a driving layin to make it 25-24. Haynes scored three more baskets before the half to help the Aztecs gain a 43-36 halftime lead.
