Monterey Park : Methane Decision Appealed

Two Montebello residents who live near the methane recovery plant operated by Getty Synthetic Fuels in Monterey Park have appealed a Planning Commission decision granting a permit to convert the plant from production of natural gas to electricity. The Monterey Park City Council will conduct a hearing on the appeal at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 13. Getty, which operates the plant at the closed Operating Industries landfill, is seeking to produce electricity because it can be sold at a higher profit than natural gas. Some residents have voiced opposition, raising questions about the safety of the plant and its impact on air quality and the environment. The appeal was filed by Samuel Villalobos and Bob D. Quan.
