Sutton, Stonerock in San Diego Race

Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park High and Daren Stonerock of Saugus will be the only athletes from the Valley area competing Saturday in the Kinney National High School Cross-Country Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego.

There will be 32 runners in both the boys and girls divisions of the race, which starts at 10 a.m.

Last week in regional competition at Woodward Park in Fresno, Sutton, a junior, finished second in the girls division. She ran the 5000 meter course in 17:28--18 seconds behind the winner, Lori Chapman of Gundersun High in San Jose.

Sutton sprinted the last few hundred meters to finish one second in front of Rebecca Chamberlain of Leigh High in San Jose, who was runner-up in last year’s national championship.

In the boys division, Stonerock finished sixth with a time of 15:01. Mark Mastalair of Jesuit High in Sacramento finished first in 14:53.

Other local finishers included Lisa Rizzo of Hart, who was 11th with a time of 18:08. Rizzo will be a third alternate in Saturday’s national meet. Freshman Heather Scobia of Saugus finished 16th with a time of 18:14. Michelle Lewis of Buena finished 17th at 18:14.

More than 1,300 runners from 13 western states attended the meet.

Grand Prix Ends Senior Season

John Bennett of Tarzana heads the list of local competitors in the Head Grand Prix Masters Tennis Championships at Rancho Bernardo Inn on Dec. 13-15 in San Diego.

The Masters is the culmination of the season for senior players (35 and older). Competition is grouped into four age divisions, with qualifying points determined by individual finishes on the 53-tournament Grand Prix circuit.

The top eight point winners qualify in their respective division of the tournament.

Bennett was one of 13 to qualify with more than 1,000 points.

Others to qualify from the Valley are:

Gabreil Harmat (Reseda), Robert Baker (Van Nuys), Bill Richling (Encino), Robert Reese (San Fernando), Anna Staff (Burbank) Judy Marsh (North Hollywood), Fran Wakefield (Northridge) and Eleanor Harbula (Sylmar).
