Community College Basketball Roundup : Cole Leads Rancho Santiago Over Chaffey

Howard Cole scored 27 points to lead Rancho Santiago College to an 87-75 win over Chaffey College Thursday night in nonconference action at Chaffey.

Cole, a freshman from Verbum Dei, also was the leading rebounder in the game with 14. Teammates Brent Martin and Eric Schurman each scored 17. Schurman also had nine rebounds.

The Dons (6-1) trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half before taking a 42-41 lead in the last 10 seconds of the half. The Panthers fell to 0-5.

In Golden West Tournament action:

Antelope Valley 88, Golden West 73--Calvin Francis scored 19 points and Anthony Fleming added 17 to lead Antelope Valley (7-3) to the first-round win over the host Rustlers (1-3). Golden West, which trailed by 15 points at halftime, cut the lead to one with 8:51 left in the game but was then outscored, 26-12.

Kevin Smith led the Rustlers with 21 points, while Bryon Strachan added 18. Lem Uto added 8 points and 16 rebounds for Golden West. The Rustlers made only 30 of 76 shots from the field. Antelope Valley was 33 of 69 from the field and 22 of 28 from the line.

College of the Sequoias 42, Fullerton 40--The Giants beat the Hornets to advance to the semifinals of the L.A. Trade Tech Tournament. Fullerton (8-3) was led by Stacy Rooney, who scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds.

Orange Coast 80, Long Beach City College 61--Lisa Schumaker scored 22 points and had 8 rebounds and Melissa Sejdasz added 14 points to lead the Pirates past the Vikings in Long Beach. OCC improved its record to 7-2. Long Beach is 0-9.

In small college women’s action:

Southern California College 92, Christ College of Irvine 76--Connie Brazell scored 22 points and had 6 assists to lead the Vanguards to the win in the first round of the Redlands Tournament at the University of Redlands. Kim Nidey added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Gail Brown had 13 points and 8 rebounds for SCC, which will play Redlands in tonight’s semifinals.
