Boys’ Roundup : Crawford Gets Help From Football Stars to Hold Off University City in Basketball

Kevin Williams and Mark Hayes made news during the football season by helping Crawford High School reach the San Diego Section 2-A championship game. In their first game on the basketball court this season, the two produced big numbers as well.

Williams, a 6-foot guard, scored 10 points and had 14 rebounds, and Hayes, a 6-6 power forward, added 10 points and 13 rebounds to lead Crawford to a 48-39 nonleague victory over University City Friday at Crawford High. The two paced Crawford to a 49-30 advantage in rebounds.

Crawford (2-0) jumped out to a 26-15 lead at halftime and increased that to 37-21 after three quarters. University City (1-1) made a belated comeback in the final quarter. Rod Cawell and Kendall Lavendar led the University City offense with eight points apiece.

University 54, St. Augustine 36--University took advantage of St. Augustine’s fourth-quarter turnovers, outscoring the Saints, 22-6, in the final quarter at Saint Augustine High.

University led, 24-20, at halftime, but St. Augustine (3-4) rallied to tie the game after three quarters. James Wilson led University with 15 points, and Matt Seidlinger added 11. Charley Applegate had 15 points for St. Augustine, and Joe Shandley added 9.

Ramona 65, Lake Elsinore 47--Mike Pendell scored 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Ramona (2-3) to the win in the Lake Elsinore tournament. Ramona was 2-1 in tournament play and finished third. Ramona guard John Monetta had 48 assists in the three games and was selected to the all-tournament team. Ramona took a 32-22 halftime lead over Lake Elsinore and was never threatened. Robert Cronic scored 18 points for Ramona.

Escondido 63, Coronado 47--Escondido (3-1) outscored Coronado, 27-13, in the second half to break open a close game at Escondido High. Escondido led, 24-17, after one quarter, but the Islanders battled back to make it a two-point game at halftime. Kevin Ahern led Escondido with 20 points. Paul Baldwin and Jose Velazquez added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Jay Malcott led Coronado (2-2) with 21 points.
