McKay to Leave Tampa, Paper Reports
John McKay, the original coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who was kicked upstairs to the front office last year, will leave his post as president of the National Football League team at the end of the season, a newspaper reported Saturday.
McKay, 62, was hired as coach in 1976 and held that job until becoming president at the end of the 1984 season.
The Orlando Sentinel reported that unidentified associates of McKay said he will step into semi-retirement at the end of the season so he can spend more time with his four children and four grandchildren.
The newspaper said McKay would remain as an adviser to the team in 1986.
McKay has declined to talk for the record to reporters since taking the president’s job and declined to comment to the Sentinel for the story.
McKay compiled a record of 44-88-1. He was the head coach at USC the preceding 16 seasons and posted a 137-40-8 record.
