San Diego Prep Basketball Roundup : Dang Hits the Shot and Mira Mesa Gets a Win

Phil Dang hit a shot with five seconds left to lift Mira Mesa High School past Hoover, 52-50, in the Hilltop Invitational championship game.

The Marauders, rebounding from last season’s last-place finish in the City Eastern League, trailed, 31-30, at halftime. Mira Mesa limited Hoover to four points in the third period and led, 40-35, entering the fourth quarter.

Bill Lee led Mira Mesa with 17 points. Hoover’s top scorer with Brian Angelo with 15.

Lee was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Also selected to the all-tournament team were David Mossman of Hilltop, Scott Thompson of Torrey Pines, Mike Walker of Hoover, Matt Simmons of Sweetwater and Steve Daley of Kearny.

In other Hilltop Invitational action:

Kearny 53, Hilltop 47 (overtime)--Daley scored 21 points to lead the Komets in the third-place game. The score was tied, 44-44, entering the overtime period. The game was marked by 44 fouls, 29 on Hilltop. Kearny was called for four technicals, all in the third quarter. The Komets converted 33 of 43 free throws. Mossman led Hilltop with 15 points.

Sweetwater 68, Point Loma 53--The Red Devils led by five points after three quarters, then outscored the Pointers, 19-9, in the final period of the game for fifth place. Sweetwater’s Mahlon Williams led all scorers with 25 points, and Simmons added 19. Point Loma (2-5) was led by Arlondo Hill with 18 points.

Torrey Pines 49, Chula Vista 46--Chula Vista had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds, but the shot missed and Torrey Pines won the game for seventh place. Thompson paced Torrey Pines with 20 points.
