Galloway Scores Unanimous Decision Over Colome in Welterweight Fight

Dio Colome, a hard-hitting welterweight from Los Angeles, entered the ring at the Forum Tuesday night wearing two huge papier-mache gloves on his fists, the more to scare his opponent with, no doubt.

But, before Colome could hit Manning Galloway, he had to catch him. And he never did.

Galloway, a left-hander from Columbus, Ohio, won $50,000 and the Stroh’s welterweight championship with a unanimous 12-round decision over Colome. The judges’ cards were 117-111, 115-113, 116-114, all for Galloway.

There were no knockdowns in the bout as Galloway continuously stayed out of harm’s way while piling up points. Galloway, 147, easily outboxed Colome, 147, in the middle and late rounds, scoring with jabs and combinations without taking much punishment.

The win raised Galloway’s record to 38-8-1.

Colome, originally from the Dominican Republic, has a 21-3 record. He earned $10,000.

The tournament began in June with 11 welterweights fighting to reach the final. Both Galloway and Colome had won two tournament bouts.

In a middleweight semifinal, Lindell Holmes of Detroit scored a sixth-round technical knockout over previously undefeated Jack Padia of Penngrove.
