MOVIES TO BUMP ‘DYNASTY’ AT KTTV
In a major reshuffling of its prime-time lineup, KTTV Channel 11 said Wednesday that it plans to replace its hourlong newscast and reruns of “Dynasty” with a two-hour movie block, beginning Jan. 13.
The independent station’s 10 p.m. news show will be cut to 30 minutes and will air at 11 p.m., competing against the newscasts on the network-owned stations (KCBS Channel 2, KNBC Channel 4 and KABC-TV Channel 7). The “Dynasty” reruns, which have garnered low ratings since premiering in September, will follow at 11:30 p.m.
In their place from 9 to 11 p.m. on weeknights will be old movies, which will compete for the first hour with movies that begin at 8 p.m. on KTTV Channel 5 and KCOP Channel 13.
Despite the plans to cut the late news show from 60 to 30 minutes, no reduction in staffing is planned, a KTTV spokeswoman said. The station will continue to air a 30-minute news program at 8 p.m., she added.
KTTV’s decision regarding “Dynasty” is the second blow in two weeks to the prospect of syndication success for prime-time TV’s soap opera champs. KHJ-TV Channel 9 said last week that it plans to move “Dallas” reruns from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. as of Jan. 6.
