The Record: Lowell High School of San Francisco set the record in 1938. Valley Christian High recorded its 10th shutout (in 13 games) with a 38-0 victory over Desert in the opening round of the Southern Section CIF Inland Conference playoffs.

Highlights: Valley Christian was top ranked during the regular season and allowed just 35 points all year.

The Team: The Valley Christian defense consisted of linemen Jeff Hogan, Greg Miller, Eric Johnson, linebackers Steve King, Sean McGrew, Scott Krosschell, and Mike Taylor, and defensive backs Lane Reed, Ron Vande Vegte, Mike DeMaster, Jeff Westra. The nickel back was Glenn Struiksma. The Crusader’s head Coach was Mike Wunderley (7th year). The defensive coaches were Terry Veltkamp, Rick De Bie and David De Vries.

A Review of Notable Area Accomplishments From the 1985 Fall High School Season NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS Kelly Brooks: The 5-10, 190-pound senior running back from La Mirada High gained 2,003 yards on 288 carries. He averaged seven yards a carry. He averaged 39.9 yards a punt. He scored 28 touchdowns. Brooks was named the Most Valuable Player of the Suburban League. La Mirada advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section CIF Central Conference football playoffs.

Hubert Turner: A 16-year old senior at Schurr High, Turner played a half dozen football positions during the year. At 6-2, 180 pounds he was a standout receiver for the Spartans of the Foothill League. He gained 1,423 yards on 64 receptions. He punted for an average of 38.1. As a defensive back he returned three of his five interceptions for scores. He totalled 126 points on the year. Schurr (10-2) advanced to the second round of the Southern Section CIF Coastal Conference playoffs.

Eliud Pacheco: Pacheco was instrumental in leading Bell High to the City Section CIF football finals. The Eagles finished 11-1. The Senior quarterback completed 65% of his pass attempts.

Mike Zoetewey: Zoetewey quarterbacked an offense at Valley Christian High that averaged 35 points a game. He completed more than 60% of his passes. He threw for 23 TDs.

Ed Robinson: Millikan High’s Robinson, a wide receiver/defensive back for the co-champion Rams, made the catch that beat Poly, 15-13, in the final minute of the Moore League football title game. His 59 receptions set a school record. He also picked off six passes on the year.

John Harris: A wide receiver on the Whittier Christian High football team, Harris had 65 catches for 1,076 yards. He was a Times all-Southeast second team choice.

Robbie Watkins: In two years Watkins has the chance to be the best back in the area. As a sophomore at La Serna High this fall, he ran for 1,340 yards. He averaged 7.1 yards a carry and scored 15 touchdowns.

Jaso and Whiting: First-year football co-Coaches Jerry Jaso and Thomas Whiting of Poly High directed the Jackrabbits to the Southern Section CIF Big Five Conference co-championship. The Hares tied with Edison of Huntington Beach, 14-14. Jaso was the school’s defensive coordinator. Whiting handled the offense. Defensively, Poly recorded six shutouts. The team won two playoff games by a single point each. Poly has now won or shared 11 Southern Section titles.

Rob Donlan: Donlan set back-to-back receiving marks in the City of Long Beach over the past two seasons. This year he caught 66 passes (the record) for 921 yards and seven touchdowns. The old mark (60 receptions) was set by Donlan last year. He was instrumental in helping the St. Anthony High football team to its first playoff berth in five years. He was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the Camino Real League.

Victor Vasquez: The El Rancho High defensive lineman recorded 21 quarterback sacks this year. He was named the Whitmont League’s Defensive Lineman of the Year. El Rancho (10-2) advanced to the second round of the Southern Section CIF Eastern Conference football playoffs.

Rick Ready: An Ohio native, Ready coached the St. Paul High football team into the playoffs for the first time in three years. The school won its first five games and finished with a 7-4 record.

Ken Sharrar: A 23-year old coach, Sharrar guided St. Anthony High to its first football playoff berth since 1980. The Saints finished at 6-5.

Dennis Brown: The Jordan High defensive lineman was a three-year Times all-South Coast selection. He’s considered one of the top football players in Southern California. On a team that had a 2-7 overall record, he recorded 15 quarterback sacks. He sacked Michael Herring of Poly four times when the two teams met.

Kevin Holland: Took advantage of college basketball’s early signing period to ink a pact with DePaul University. The 6-9 Cerritos High star was one of a handful of players to do so in the area. He was heavily recruited.

Dick Hill: The former Downey High football coach directed Santa Ana High to the Southern Section CIF Southern Conference title by upsetting everyone along the way. Santa Ana was the No. 3 team from the Century League, but Hill peaked the team in time for the playoffs. Hill coached at Downey in the 1950’s. In 1956 Downey played a 13-13 tie with Anaheim for the CIF Major Division title.

Keith Billingslea: The South Gate High senior has already scored an area-high, 45 points in early season prep basketball action. Billingslea averaged about 30 points a game last year when he was a Times all-Southeast choice. The season is still young......

Jordan Volleyball: The Panthers’ girls volleyball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section CIF 4A volleyball playoffs. Jordan was knocked out by the eventual champion, Marlborough, 15-10, 15-6, 15-10.

Don Peterson: The El Rancho High football coach led the Dons to a 10-2 record (including a 10-game win streak) and into the second round of the playoffs. Although the team won the Whitmont League title, a poll of league coaches picked the team to finish no higher than third. In 10 years Peterson is 68-37-3.

Byron Rex: The Bellflower High football player managed 47 catches for the Bucs. He also punted for a 40.9 yard average.

Madison Wilkerson: A football player at Whittier Christian, he led the area in punting with a 42.0 average. His longest boot was 65 yards.

Allan Trent: Mayfair High finished the football season with a 1-9 record, but Trent was successful on 62 receptions for 834 yards in the “Run and Shoot” offense employed by the Monsoons.

On a Streak: The Lynwood High football team takes a 30-game league winning streak into its 1986 San Gabriel Valley League opener. Lynwood has won six of the past seven SGVL titles.

Eric Rubalcava, Schurr Vital Facts: School Schurr High Position Quarterback Ht., Wt. 5-10, 170 Class Senior Achievements: Passing yardage: 2,871 yards Passing TDs 27 Pass completions 137 Pass attempts 226 Interceptions 6 Completion rate 60.6% Team Finish: Schurr advanced into the second round of the Southern Section Coastal Conference playoffs. The team was 10-2. Waldir Guerra Sets National Soccer Career Scoring Mark Tale of the Tape: Waldir Guerra, native of El Salvador, 5-9, 145, Senior.

Sports: Guerra was a forward on the Bell High School soccer team and the kicker for the football team.

Soccer Records: With seven goals against Roosevelt (a 12-1 win) in his final game of the regular season, he set a national prep soccer scoring mark of 114 career goals. The previous record of 110 goals belonged to Gilbert Sanchez of Montgomery High in San Diego. The record stood for five years. Guerra also set a City Section record of 11 goals in a single game in an 18-1 win over Roosevelt.

Football Highlights: Guerra connected on 11 of 14 field goal attempts. He was instrumental in Bell advancing to the finals of the City Section 2A championship game and finishing with an 11-1 record. Two of his misses came from 58 and 62 yards out. Bothered by an injury to his right leg which he received in a soccer match earlier in the day, Guerra later kicked field goals and PAT left-footed that night in the school’s football game. He was an all-city choice.
