Area Roundup : Rancho Santiago’s Free Throw Shooting Beat Fullerton

Rancho Santiago College took advantage of its superior free throw shooting Saturday night to edge Fullerton, 99-94, and take third place in the Rancho Santiago Tournament.

Eric Schurman made 11 of 13 shots from the line and tied a tournament record by making 20 free throws in a row over two games to lead the Dons. Rancho Santiago hit 31 of its 39 free throws. Fullerton made 18 of 30 free throws.

Three players scored at least 20 points for the Dons (12-3). Howard Cole had a team-high 22, making 9 of 13 shot attempts. Schurman added 21 points and Mark Moses had 20. Fullerton’s Rocco Meyers led all scorers with 28 points, and teammate Steve Snow added 24.

Santa Monica 88, L.A. Trade Tech 80--Santa Monica (10-6) won the championship game as tournament most valuable player Anthony Williams scored 17 points. He had help from Kevin Parks, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Brown had 29 points for L.A.Trade Tech (9-6).

L.A. Pierce 76, L.A. Valley 67--Forward Tony Thomas had 17 points and Tony Goodall added 14 points to lead the Brahmas (4-2) to the consolation championship. L.A. Valley’s Robin Andrews had 17 points and Mario Lopez added 11 points for the Monarchs.

In the San Diego Mesa Tournament:

Orange Coast 64, San Diego Mesa 45--The Pirates outscored the Olympians, 18-4, during a seven-minute span in the second half of the third-place game to take a 40-22 lead. Orange Coast (7-6) shot 58% in the second half, making 18 of 31 attempts.

OCC center Joe Seager had a game-high 21 points. Seager made 9 of 11 shot attempts, had 12 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. Scott Clements added 18 points and had 6 rebounds for the Pirates. The Pirates’ Fred Bickett had 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
