Wilson Gets Hot in 2nd Half; Cleveland Wins

Trevor Wilson has a way of taking a basketball game and completely wrecking it. When the 6-6 Cleveland High forward gets in gear, suspense goes directly out the gym door.

Saturday night at the Chaminade tournament, Wilson turned a close game into a 75-61 rout over Oakland Bishop O’Dowd in one semifinal game.

Cleveland will play Fairfax, an 80-62 winner over Verbum Dei, in the tournament championship on Monday night at 7:30.

Wilson scored 25 of his game-high 33 points in the second half as Cleveland pulled away from a 34-32 halftime edge.

Wilson hit all nine of his shots in the second half and made 7 of 8 from the free throw line. He couldn’t miss. Add 15 rebounds, and it’s not a bad night.

Bishop O’Dowd Coach Mike Phelps thought so.

“Offensively, Trevor is the best around,” he said. “He made an awful lot of good shots against some good pressure tonight.”

In three tournament games, Wilson has scored 111 points and collected 40 rebounds.

Adrian King added 11 points for the Cavaliers (5-4). Junior center Phil Palmer paced Bishop O’Dowd (10-2) with 21 points and teammate Gio Welch had 12.

Burbank 66, Calabasas 50--Burbank High took an 18-10 first quarter lead, then cruised to a consolation semifinal win over Calabasas.

Senior guard Tom Clansen paced the Bulldogs (5-4) with 28 points. Teammate Tyson Manning added 14 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds. Junior guard Steve Ward scored a game-high 30 for the Coyotes. Burbank will meet Bishop Montgomery for the consolation championship at 3 p.m. on Monday.

Bishop Montgomery 56, Chatsworth 52--Senior forward James Taylor scored a game-high 23 points and guard Ramses Reynoso scored 12, leading the Knights to the win. Neil Coffman had 17 points for the Chancellors (3-4).

In other tournament action:

Concord De La Salle defeated Murphy, 80-42, and Serra beat Fresno Edison, 78-72, to set up a meeting on Monday afternoon for fifth place.

Serra Forward James Moses, a 6-6 sophomore transfer from Alemany, scored 17 points in the Cavaliers’ victory.
