Baroness Direct Wins Las Flores by Neck Over Favored Her Royalty

Baroness Direct held off favored Her Royalty Wednesday to win the $65,850 Las Flores Handicap at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, Baroness Direct took the lead early, opened a 1 1/2-length margin in midstretch and had enough left to win by a neck. She covered the six furlongs in 1:08 2 5.
Her Royalty, ridden by Chris McCarron, was 4 1/2 lengths in front of Aerturas, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, in the race for older fillies and mares.
A 5-year-old mare trained by John Gosden, Baroness Direct paid $8.80, $3.80 and $3. Her Royalty, the 9-5 favorite, returned $3.20 and $2.60; Aerturas paid $3.40 to show.
Powder Break fought back from last place to catch favorite Shocker T. near the wire and win the $200,000 La Prevoyante Invitational on the grass at Calder Race Course in Miami.
Powder Break was ridden by Jose Santos, Shocker T. by Gene St. Leon.
Powder Break ran the 1 1/2 miles in 2:30 2 5 and paid $25.40, $8.40 and $3.80. Shocker T. paid $4 and $3; third-place Devalois paid $3.80 to show.
