Allen Named Coach at Portland State

Ernest (Pokey) Allen was named head football coach at Portland State University on Thursday, the Western Football Conference school announced.

He replaces Don Read, who resigned in November to become coach at Montana. Allen, 40, was the defensive coordinator for the Portland Breakers of the United States Football League last season, and filled the same position for the Los Angeles Express in 1983 and 1984.
