Rex, the White House dog, returned home to his mistress, First Lady Nancy Reagan, on Wednesday--hale and hearty despite a tonsillectomy.

“Oh, yes, he’s back--and barking,” said Mary Gordon, an aide to Mrs. Reagan.

The year-old King Charles spaniel underwent the operation Tuesday at an animal hospital. The White House did not disclose the name of either the hospital or the surgeon.

When President Reagan presented his wife with the puppy several weeks before Christmas, he knew the dog had an infected tonsil. When medicine failed to help, surgery was recommended.
