Marvin Carter’s two three-point baskets in overtime led Fresno State to a 58-55 victory over Cal State Long Beach Thursday night.

For Long Beach, once again it was a case of not being able to find a way to win.

The 49ers, playing at home for the first time this season after 14 road games, had a chance to win in regulation, but freshman Andre Purry missed a free throw with four seconds left.

“Is this never going to cease?” asked Long Beach Coach Ron Palmer, whose team has lost three close Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. games this month.

Carter, who led Fresno with 18 points, opened the overtime period with a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 49-46 lead.

After baskets by Purry and DeAnthony Langston had put Long Beach back in front, 50-49, Carter made another long-range shot and two free throws to give the Bulldogs a 54-50 lead.

A three-point shot by Morlon Wiley cut the Fresno lead to 56-55 with 15 seconds left, but Jos Kuipers clinched the victory with two free throws.

A last-second attempt to tie the game by Reggie Wallace bounced off the rim.

Carter, who came into the game as a 30%-shooting reserve, made 7 of 11 shots and also led Fresno with 5 rebounds.

Stafford Hamlin and Stephen Hamlin led the 49ers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The 49ers outrebounded Fresno, 36-23, but their 40% shooting negated that advantage.

Fresno is 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the PCAA. Long Beach is 4-11 and 0-4.
