Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Los Alamitos Takes Hold of Second Place

Forward Jeannette Dorsey scored 18 points Tuesday night to lead Los Alamitos High School to a 56-53 Empire League win over El Dorado at Los Alamitos.

The win gives the Griffins a 6-1 record in league play. Los Alamitos, 13-4 overall, is in sole possession of second place behind Esperanza. El Dorado (5-2, 10-3) is in third.

Kelly Moore added 14 points for Los Alamitos. The Golden Hawks’ Cathy Newbine led all scorers with 22 points. Jill Matyuch added 17 for El Dorado.

In other Empire League action:

Esperanza 54, Loara 16--Sharon Warmus scored 28 points and Karin Davidson added 12 to lead the Aztecs (7-0, 14-3) to an easy win at home. Loara is 2-5 in league play.

Kennedy 52, Pacifica 27--Dena Davidson scored 16 points and Ursula Lovely added 14 to lead the host Irish (1-6, 2-11) to their first league win. The Mariners fell to 0-7 and 2-9.

In Century League action:

Foothill 74, Canyon 20--The Knights led, 20-0, after the first quarter. Robin Welch led Foothill (6-0, 16-1) with 14 points. Stephanie Fleischaker, Sue Davis and Becky Sullivan each added 12 points. Nine of the 10 Foothill players who played, scored.

In Freeway League action:

Sonora 40, Sunny Hills 37--Kim Enfing scored 15 points to lead the Raiders (1-2) to the win at Sunny Hills. The Lancers (1-2) actually led at the half, 21-15. Sunny Hills’ Kerri Towles led all scorers with 20 points.

La Habra 46, Fullerton 33--Robin Seabrook scored 16 points and Michelle Reeves added 13 to lead the Highlanders (3-0, 14-4) to the win at Fullerton. Fullerton (2-1) was led by Hidie Shikuma’s 10 points.

In Garden Grove League action:

Bolsa Grande 48, Rancho Alamitos 21--Caroline Matney and Mitzi Huff each scored 13 points to lead the Matadors (2-2, 5-8) to the win. Matney also had eight rebounds and five steals. Lynn Egan had 10 points for Rancho Alamitos (0-4).

In Olympic League action:

Whittier Christian 66, Ontario Christian 57--Center Cindy Vyskocil had 33 points to lead the Heralds (7-1, 10-3) to this win at Ontario. Toya Ellis added 20 points for Whittier Christian. Lisa DeWyn scored 16 points for Ontario Christian.

Orange Lutheran 51, Maranatha 49--Jill Trenschel made a jump shot with a minute left to put the Lancers ahead for good, 50-49. Center Sue Brockschmidt made the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 15 seconds left to put Orange Lutheran (3-4, 7-7) ahead by two points. The Lancers outscored Maranatha (0-6, 1-12), 13-3, at the free throw line.

In Orange League action:

Brea-Olinda 90, Anaheim 22--Reserve guard Teri Winder scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Wildcats (3-0, 15-2) to an easy win. Leslie Dittman, a reserve forward, added 18 for Brea. Eleven players scored for Brea. Anaheim is 0-3 in league play.

Magnolia 61, Western 50--Michelle Carter had 37 points to lead the Sentinels (3-0, 11-5) to a win at home. Magnolia had a 31-10 lead at halftime and was never threatened. Melanie Williams led Western (0-3) with 27 points.

Savanna 46, Valencia 29--Venetta Dorlis scored 19 points and Koury Najla added 11 to lead the Rebels (2-1, 9-9) to the win at Valencia. Lisa Linder led the Tigers (1-2, 9-6) with seven points.

In Sea View League action:

Corona del Mar 50, Costa Mesa 44--Center Michelle Willard had 28 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Sea Kings (6-0, 9-7) to this win at Corona del Mar. Stephanie Swanson had 14 points and Suzanne Cowley had 12 points for Costa Mesa (3-3, 8-8).

Woodbridge 70, University 36--Forward Gilly Powell had 23 points, 19 rebounds and 8 steals to lead the Warriors (5-1, 11-6) at Woodbridge. Randee Mahoney added 12 points and 9 assists. Noelle Sase scored 17 points to lead the Trojans (0-6, 2-11).

Saddleback 40, Estancia 37--Monica Walton made a jump shot with five minutes left to put the Roadrunners ahead for good in a close game at Saddleback. Walton ended the game with 19 points. Forward Leslie Self had 10 points to lead the Eagles (2-4, 4-10).

In South Coast League action:

Dana Hills 44, San Clemente 37--The host Dolphins (1-4) outscored the Tritons, 21-10, in the final quarter to get their first league win of the season. Laura Dowdy scored 17 points to lead Dana Hills. San Clemente fell to 0-5 in league.

In Sunset League action:

Ocean View 54, Huntington Beach 47--Trina Vlachos scored 16 points and Terry Zanelli added 11 points to lead the Seahawks (3-1, 13-6) to a win at Huntington Beach. Forward Shelly Straight had 13 rebounds for Ocean View. The Oilers were led by Tami Chick’s scored 15. The Oilers are 1-3, 9-10. Pammy Keller had 12 points.

Marina 47, Westminster 39--Sophomore center Dawn Charroin scored 29 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, and had 10 rebounds to lead the Vikings (1-3, 11-7) to the win. Shannon Bates had 13 points for Westminster (1-3, 8-7).

Fountain Valley 66, Edison 47--Dawn Lawler scored 20 points and Sue Walin added 19 to lead the Barons (4-0, 17-4) to the win at Edison. Edison’s Kristen Wilson scored 18 points for the Chargers (2-2, 14-5).
