AIDS Clinic Modifying ID Cards

Share

A private clinic that has come under attack from the Los Angeles City Council announced Thursday that it is making changes in its AIDS antibody blood test identification card after consulting with health-care workers from other AIDS organizations, a spokeswoman said.

The City Council called for an investigation of the National Assn. for AIDS Awareness after questioning the group’s proposal to provide the identification cards to those with a negative AIDS antibody blood test. The plastic card that clients are to receive when they test negative, besides bearing a photo, an expiration date and the word “OK,” will also include a statement that reads: “This card in no way guarantees that the person pictured has not been exposed to AIDS.” The card will also note that the client has participated in counseling on acquired immune deficiency syndrome and so-called safe sex, said spokeswoman Constance Yambert.

The West Los Angeles center remains closed while its staff tries to resolve building code violations.
