San Diego Roundup : Globetrotters to Perform Tonight

The Harlem Globetrotters, featuring their first woman player, Lynette Woodard, will perform at 8 tonight in the Sports Arena.

Woodard was chosen from a field of 18 women who were selected to try out for the Globetrotters. She scored 3,649 points during her four years at the University of Kansas and was captain of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team.

In their 60th year, the Globetrotters have played more than 16,000 games in more than 1,600 North American cities and 101 foreign countries. Tonight, they play their traditional opponents, the Washington Generals.

The March of Dimes’ Super Run V, a fund-raiser for local March of Dimes programs, will start at 8 Sunday morning at La Jolla Village Square. Registration, on the day of the race, is set for 6:30.

The races will be 10-K and two-mile. Both courses circle the UC San Diego campus.

Among those scheduled to run is Bill Toomey, who won the Olympic decathlon in 1968 and is now involved with various youth sports programs in Orange County. Andy Hawkins of the Padres is honorary chairman of the event.

The San Diego State men’s volleyball team opens the 1986 season with a match against Aztec alumni at 7:30 tonight in Peterson Gym.

Included on the alumni squad are SDSU Coach Mark Warner and his assistant, Jack Henn. The Aztecs open the regular season Wednesday at Pepperdine.

The first Super Bowl Golf Tournament, with a four-man blind draw scramble format, will start at 9 Sunday morning at Cottonwood Country Club. The event is open to all, with prizes awarded to top finishers.
