Pacific 10 Roundup : Oregon State, Stanford Score Victories

Center Jose Ortiz scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half Friday night to pace Oregon State to a 58-42 Pacific 10 victory over California at Corvallis, Ore.

The win snapped a three-game Oregon State losing streak and boosted the Beavers into a tie with Cal for third place in the conference standings at 5-3, a half-game behind second-place Arizona. Washington is in first place.

Oregon State (9-7) never trailed but led by only 24-20 at halftime. The Beavers were still ahead by just 32-28 after Cal’s Dave Butler scored with 14:36 to play.

But the Beavers scored seven straight points, with the help of several Cal turnovers, to take a 39-28 advantage on a three-point play by the 6-10 Ortiz with 13:04 remaining. The Bears never came closer than seven again.

The Bears (13-5) made only 5 of 19 shots from the field to open the game and wound up hitting just 32%. Cal made only 4 of 11 shots from the foul line.

Ortiz, a transfer from Puerto Rico who recently gained another year of eligibility and is listed as a junior, hit 11 of 15 from the field and had 10 rebounds.

Stanford 73, Oregon 69--Freshman center Howard Wright scored 18 points as Stanford won in overtime at McArthur Court in Eugene, Ore.

With the victory, the Cardinal boosted its record to 4-4 in the conference and 10-10 overall. The Ducks fell to 1-8 in the conference and 6-13 overall.

Oregon’s only victory in the Pac-10 race was an 83-69 decision at Stanford on Jan. 13.

With four seconds to play and Oregon trailing 67-65, Duck guard David Girley hit a 17-foot jump shot to send the game into overtime.

Stanford scored the first four points in overtime on consecutive free throws by forward Greg Butler and guard Keith Ramee. After an Oregon basket, Wright connected on a jump shot with nine seconds left to put the game out of reach.

Wright and Butler led Stanford in rebounding with 6 each. Todd Lichti had 17 points for Stanford.
