Sunset League : Ocean View Beats Fountain Valley, 67-42
Ocean View High School’s Blaine Debrouwer and Ricky Butler combined to score 20 points in the third quarter to take Fountain Valley out of a game the Barons were barly in.
The third-ranked Seahawks scored 26 points in the third quarter and went on to win the Sunset League boys’ basketball game, 67-42, in front of 500 spectators at Ocean View.
Debrouwer, a senior guard, scored 11 points, and Butler, a senior center, added 9, as the Seahawks turned a 29-15 halftime lead into a 55-26 lead going into the final quarter.
Butler, who was the leading rebounder with 11, scored 17 points before going to the bench with two minutes left to play in the third quarter.
Butler and Tony Panzica combined to open the third quarter with a lob pass above the rim that Butler dunked to start the string of 20 points between he and Debrouwer.
Fountain Valley could only score three points during the Butler-Debrouwer scoring parade.
Debrouwer remained in the game and ran the offense for much of the fourth quarter before coming out with two minutes left. He finished as the leading scorer with 21 points. The 6-foot 1-inch guard has signed with New Mexico State.
“I like to leave one starter in there to run the offense,” Ocean View Coach Jim Harris said. “Anyway, he was shooting well, so we left him in.”
Ocean View opened the game much as it started the second half. The Seahawks made their first five shots and 7 of their first 8 to build a 19-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“Fountain Valley had a tough time getting back in the game,” Harris said. “They are a patient team that doesn’t like to press, and once you can get ahead of them, it’s difficult for them to come back.”
The Barons didn’t help themselves Friday by missing four shots inside the key in the first quarter and nine in the game.
Senior Ron Briggs was the only Baron to score in double figures with 15 points.
The win assures the Seahawks (16-4) of at least a tie for first in league. Ocean View is 7-0, and Fountain Valley (12-10 overall) falls to 3-4 and into a four-way tie for second place with Huntington Beach, Edison and Marina.
