College Basketball Roundup : Georgetown Defeats LSU, 74-72

Michael Jackson made two free throws with six seconds remaining as 12th-ranked Georgetown defeated No. 17 Louisiana State, 74-72, Sunday at Landover, Md.

LSU’s John Williams, playing in only his second game since spending a week in the hospital with chicken pox, scored 27 points.

With the game tied, 72-72, LSU’s Jose Vargas missed a 10-foot jumper with seven seconds remaining and Jackson was fouled by Don Redden on the rebound.

“I just went to the line telling myself I would knock those two down,” Jackson said. “And thank God that’s what happened.”

The Tigers’ Derrick Taylor missed a top-of-the-key jumper at the buzzer.

Jackson led the Hoyas with 20 points and also had 11 assists. David Wingate had 18 points.

Williams, a 6-foot 8-inch forward from Los Angeles, made 10 of 16 shots from the floor and grabbed 6 rebounds.

“I didn’t want to come out at all,” Williams said. “I was really intense for this ball game.”

Williams played the entire game in his first start since coming back from the illness. He scored 12 points Saturday in a 92-76 loss to Georgia.

The Hoyas, who have not lost a nonconference home game since December 1982, have now won six straight and improved to 17-3. LSU dropped to 16-6.

North Carolina St. 54, Kentucky 51--Chris Washburn and Charles Shackleford each scored 16 points to lead the Wolfpack to an upset victory over eighth-ranked Kentucky at Raleigh, N.C.

North Carolina State trailed, 13-4, after the first eight minutes, but eventually overcame Kentucky’s man-to-man pressure defense.

Coach Eddie Sutton said the recent schedule may have affected his club’s performance as the Wildcats fell to 18-3 and saw an eight-game winning streak snapped.

“Our fatigue showed in the second half,” Sutton said. “This is the third game in five days and I thought we got tired there in the second half and that hurt us, especially defensively.”

N. C. State Coach Jim Valvano, whose team improved to 14-6, agreed that fatigue played a factor. “I felt like they might have tired a little there in the second half when we had our spurt,” he said.

Down 28-23 at the half, the Wolfpack started off the second half with a 12-5 spurt. North Carolina State went ahead for good at 35-33 on a shot from underneath by Shackleford with 13:47 to play.

The Wolfpack then outscored Kentucky 9-1 over the next five minutes, increasing the lead to 44-34.

Ed Davender led Kentucky with 16 points.

Oregon 65, California 55--Sophomore Anthony Taylor scored 19 points to help the Oregon Ducks break a five-game losing streak with a Pacific 10 victory at Eugene, Ore.

Oregon improved to 7-13 overall and 2-8 in the Pac-10, while Cal slipped to 13-6 and 5-4.

The Ducks trailed at halftime, 28-22. Kevin Johnson scored 16 points for Cal. Oregon’s Jerry Adams had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Stanford 56, Oregon St. 52--Freshman Todd Lichti scored 13 points, including three free throws in the final minute, as Stanford (11-10, 5-4) upset Oregon State (9-8, 5-4) at Corvallis, Ore. Both teams are now tied with Cal for third place in the Pac-10.

Jose Ortiz, the Beavers’ 6-10 center, scored a game-high 17 points, with 15 coming in the second half. For Stanford, it was the first win at Oregon State since a 71-63 victory in 1975.

Illinois 80, Purdue 68--Junior forward Ken Norman scored 23 points to lead Illinois to a Big Ten victory at Champaign, Ill. Illinois is now 14-6 overall, 5-4 in the conference, while the Boilermakers, who got 30 points from sophomore guard Troy Lewis, are 16-6, 5-4.
