HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER : L. A. Baptist Passes Webb on the Run

Share

The L. A. Baptist soccer team ran like a hot car on a cold morning, starting slow but running fast once it got warm.

The fact that it was a cool, windy Tuesday afternoon enhanced the effect, as the Knights--ranked third among Southern Section 1-A schools--breezed by Webb, 5-1.

After a sluggish start, L. A. Baptist (7-0-1 in Alpha League, 12-3-2 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first half on goals by Scott Ellison and Trevor Slavick. Cesar Pangborn scored Webb’s only goal.

Eddy Harisnasuta passed the ball to Pangborn, who found a clear space between him and the net. His score made it 2-1 at halftime.

The Knights made seven shots on goal with the wind at their backs in the second half, forcing Webb goalkeeper Alex Demetriades to make some fine saves--or in some instances, attempts at saves.

Junior forward David Fursman, the Knights’ leading scorer, nailed his 17th goal of the season, while John Lowe headed in a score on a good throw in by John Denton. Minutes later, Denton passed an indirect penalty kick to Slavick, who turned around and fired the ball in for his second goal.

“I was delighted with the effort our guys put out,” Webb Coach John Heyes said, “but L. A. Baptist is an experienced team and they just wore us down.”

Webb is 4-4 in league and 7-7-1 overall.

Other scores--Agoura 8, Nordhoff 0; Simi Valley 4, Westlake 1; Newbury Park 6, Channel Islands 0.

Girls scores--Chaminade 3, St. Monica’s 1; Alemany 6, Canyon 1.
