San Diego State Tries to Stop BYU
San Diego State will attempt to snap Brigham Young’s eight-game winning streak in a Western Athletic Conference basketball game at 7:30 tonight in the Sports Arena.
BYU, 11-9 overall, has not lost since Jan. 4 at New Mexico, 60-57. Included in the Cougars’ win streak was an 80-76 overtime upset of Notre Dame on Jan. 13 at BYU.
Jeff Chatman leads the Cougars in scoring with an 18.2 average. Bob Capener, a graduate of Torrey Pines High, is second with a 13.5 average. Tom Gneiting, a 6-foot 10-inch center, is averaging a team-leading 6.9 rebounds.
The Cougars will be playing without assist-leader Averian Parrish, who quit the team two weeks ago for personal reasons. Parrish was an All-American last season at Dixie College in St. George, Utah.
BYU won at home last month against SDSU, 82-70. The Aztecs played without 6-8 center Steffond Johnson, who was sidelined with a lower back injury. Anthony Watson leads SDSU with a 20.6 scoring average and has scored 118 points in the last four games.
The Aztecs are fourth in the WAC with a 6-4 record. BYU is tied for second with Wyoming at 6-2, one-half game behind Texas El Paso (7-2).
