Roundup : Coleman Paces Mt. Carmel, 48-47

Reserve center Tim Coleman scored 17 points and made a three-point play in the final minute of overtime to lead Mount Carmel High School to a 48-47 victory over Orange Glen in a Palomar League game Wednesday night.

Coleman’s three-point play broke a 45-45 tie and gave the Sundevils the points they needed for their second overtime victory over Orange Glen this season.

Orange Glen’s Cory Kelley led all scorers with 18 points Friday and teammate Steve Klinger added 15.

Mount Carmel (7-1, 14-6) remains in second place behind Poway. Orange Glen dropped to 4-3, 8-12.

In other Palomar League action:

Poway 85, San Dieguito 44--Dominick Johnson scored 23 points and added 16 rebounds to lead the No. 1-ranked Titans (8-0, 17-3) to an easy victory over the Mustangs (0-8, 7-14) at Poway.

Andy Byrne added 18 points and 5 steals for Poway, which opened a 26-6 lead after one quarter and cruised to the win.

Jud Buechler, the county’s leading scorer, was limited to 10 points by San Dieguito’s triangle-and-two defense. Paul Chan scored 12 points to lead San Dieguito.

Vista 80, Torrey Pines 74--Vista opened a 44-27 lead at halftime but barely held on to win at Torrey Pines.

Vista (4-4, 8-10) still led by 15 after three quarters, but Torrey Pines cut the lead to 73-71 with 1:14 to play. Clutch free throw shooting in the final minute enabled Vista to avoid the upset.

Vista’s Sal Aunese scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Panthers. Mike Jones added 19 points, Mike Fleming 11 and Matt Hammond 10.

Scott Thompson led Torrey Pines (2-6, 7-13) with 18 points. Jeff Steffen had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Mike Radcliff 17 points and 10 rebounds and Jeff Waldo 10 points.

In the Avocado League:

El Camino 95, Escondido 52--Steve Heard scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the No. 2-ranked Wildcats (7-0, 18-2) past the Cougars (2-6, 8-11) at El Camino.

El Camino trailed, 16-14, after the first quarter before outscoring the Cougars, 28-9, in the second to take a 42-25 halftime lead.

Kenny Crawford added 16 points for El Camino, which had four other players score in double figures. Kevin Ahern led Escondido with 14 points.

Carlsbad 57, San Marcos 46--Carlsbad outscored San Marcos, 18-6, in the second quarter en route to the win at San Marcos.

Tim Smith scored a game-high 17 points to lead Carlsbad (3-5, 6-12), with Shaun Stoll adding 13 points and Karl Molinar 12. Donald Dewhurst contributed nine rebounds.

San Marcos dropped to 0-8, 1-15.

Oceanside 56, San Pasqual 38--Junior Seau scored 17 points as the No. 6-ranked Pirates (6-2, 16-3) moved into sole possession of second place.

Oceanside outscored San Pasqual, 22-12, in the third quarter to expand a 25-19 halftime lead. Leonard Rodriguez scored 14 points to lead San Pasqual (5-3, 10-7). Rich Prusinski, the Eagles’ leading scorer, was held to 8 points.

In the Metro Conference:

Hilltop 54, Chula Vista 49--David Mossman scored 15 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and handed out 7 assists to lead the Lancers (5-4, 11-12) past the Spartans (4-5, 10-12) at Hilltop.

Brian Brookers scored 18 points and added 9 rebounds with Bill Massicot grabbing 10 rebounds to help Hilltop move into fourth place in the Mesa League.

Joe Klanchar scored 20 points to lead Chula Vista.

Mar Vista 43, Coronado 41--Robert Aquino made an 18-footer with four seconds to play to give Mar Vista the win at home.

With the game tied at 41-41, Mar Vista held the ball for 1 1/2 minutes before Aquino scored the game-winner over the Coronado zone. Aquino led Mar Vista (3-6, 5-13) with 14 points and sophomore Ricardo Decatorre added 12.

Castle Park 64, Bonita Vista 61 (OT)--Eddie Moreno and Javier Nunez scored 17 points apiece to lead No. 5 Castle Park (9-0, 18-1) to the win at Bonita Vista.

Castle Park led, 54-49, after three quarters, but Bonita Vista (5-4, 9-9) rallied to tie the game at the end of regulation. Doug Piper led Bonita Vista with 27 points and Randy Burk added 13.
