The St. Louis Cardinals said that, in spite of reports to the contrary, their vacant head coaching job had not been offered to anyone.

“No decision has been made,” said Mike Menchel, the team’s director of public relations. “I spoke with (team owner) Bill Bidwill and he told me the interview process is continuing, but is winding down.”

The Boston Globe reported that New England Patriots defensive coordinator Rod Rust was the leading candidate for the job, while a Fresno television station, KFSN, reported that Fresno State Coach Jim Sweeney had been offered the job and given a tentative contract.

United Press International reported that Sweeney arrived in St. Louis Thursday night and was greeted at the airport by Larry Wilson, the Cardinals’ director of player personnel. Sweeney, 56, is a former Cardinal assistant coach, having coached the Cardinals running backs in 1979.

The Cardinals coaching job opened when Bidwill fired Jim Hanifan shortly after the team’s final game of the season.
